2004 Domaine de Cristia Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes (France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

Dark color. Earthy nose that shows blackberry and cherry along with tree bark, chocolate, and some herbs. When I first opened it last night, the tannins were pretty strong and the flavors were more in the blackberry spectrum, but after having been opened since last night (albeit in the cellar), this is now leaning towards a softer cherry style. If I'm not mistaken, this is 100% Grenache from 70 to 80 year old vines, aged in 2-3 year old barriques. Remarkably dark color and fruit profile for an all Grenache CdP in my opinion, and I wonder whether the super low yields have something to do with that. Drinks extremely well right now, especially with the Cacio Bosco cheese (truffled peccorino) that I am nibbling on with it. Finishes exceptionally well. Highly recommended.
