2001 Ruston Family Cabernet-Merlot La Maestra (USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena)

My friend Mike brought this over tonight and with my recent dislike for California Pinot in particular, I was worried I'd dislike this. That fear, however, was unfounded. This was a really nice California Bordeaux blend. 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. Great nose of dark cherry and cassis intermingled with a little leafy tobacco and chocolate. Super texture and an excellent dry, earthy, chocolate finish. Label says 15.2% alc, but it certainly didn't taste like it at all. I am tempted to say this is what I imagine the 70s Cabs in California to have tasted like when they were young. This wine shows very little oak (barely noticeable) and I think it should have plenty of positive development ahead of it. This is actually one I could see myself buying.
