2004 Rhys Pinot Noir Alesia Sonatera (USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast)

Super dark black cherry and plum color. The Sonatera smells similar to the Chileno Valley I had recently in that it packs a good amount of funk, cherry, dried thyme and bayleaf. This is still very tannic and will reward some cellaring for 2-3 years. The tannins obscure the palate somewhat, but I can detect some plum, spice, and tobacco peeking out from underneath the tannins. I think this clearly needs a few years to come together but it is pleasurable now, although I think that the texture will improve slightly with age...it's currently a bit more dense than I'd like it personally.

P.S. When I opened this at first, there was quite a bit of CO2 in the wine so I recommend decanting for 30-60 minutes before consumption at this point.
