At some point, I got to taste Bordeaux and fell in love with the great flavors that good Bordeaux delivers. Then came Southern Rhone wines like CdP and Northern Rhone wines like Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and St. Joseph. More recently, I have been converted to a lover of Piedmont wines (Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, and even Dolcetto) and Tuscan wines such as Brunello and IGT.
My newest discovery is Burgundy...or should I say re-discovery? I say this because I started getting interested in it years ago, only to give up frustrated that I didn't "get" the wines and the area. Well, I now get the region and its wines very much. I've recently had a load of good Burgundy, and the ethereal flavors and aromas of old Burgundy (like old Barolo) are incredible.
The wines of the old world pair better with my cooking and since I drink wine usually around dinner time, I have developed a distinct preference for old world wines. Now, what should I do with the loads of California Pinot Noir that I've acquired via mailing lists? I will likely sell them because I, just like most folks, have budget and space constraints. It's not easy to part with your "babies" though because you collected them for years and cared for them. A part of me thinks I may enjoy them again in the future, but another part of me knows that this will only be true for a small number of these CA Pinots.
Wine is fun and sometimes we have to correct our buying and drinking patterns because our palate changes.
