2003 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape (France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

Popped and poured from a 375ml bottle. Deep, dark, and brooding. This wine seems almost atypically dense for Chateauneuf with what must be a high percentage of Syrah and Mourvedre. Nose is slightly closed at first but opens up with some time to reveal dried herbs, blackberries, currants, and licorice. Superb texture and long finish round out this experience. My favorite 2003 CdP that I have tried so far by a long shot.
