If you drink this now, plan on decanting for at least 1-2 hours. When I first opened this, it could have passed for an Aussie Merlot. It had that much stuffing. The fruit is definitely very ripe and the wine is clearly walking the line between being overblown and not. It is firmly in a new world style though. Although the color is more in the red spectrum than the black, the palate is loaded with black fruit, tar, and licorice. Finishes strong, but slightly bitter and I am wondering if there is some heat to the finish. Although clearly a reasonably good wine, this is not even in the same league with the Brunellos and Montepulciano wines I usually enjoy. It was also not a good food companion, and it lacks the rusticity that I like in Italian wine. This could easily be a California Merlot. Overall, this is a pass for me, but I'll be curious what this will be like in another few years.
