2004 Rhys Pinot Noir Alpine Road Vineyard (USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Santa Cruz Mountains)

A very atypical wine for California Pinot. Super dark, nearly syrah-like dark garnet color verging on black. Opaque. The nose reminds me more of a young St. Joseph or Crozes-Hermitage than Pinot with some interesting camphor, pencil shavings and pain grille. On the palate, it's unmistakably Pinot, but a really dark fruit profile with a good shot of tobacco and floral notes. Finishes strong and will last for a long time by CA Pinot standards, I believe. This is so unique, it's baffling and awesome at the same time.
