2003 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Sonoma County (USA, California, Sonoma County)

This is really good. Carmine red color that tends a little towards browning. Just a great nose of mushrooms, earth, rose oil, marzipane, and a hint of spice. Fresh acidity and silky texture. Flavors of red currant, leather, white chocolate shavings, and a little white truffle. Finishes really well. This, to me, is the way I like California Pinot. Food friendly, restrained, earthy, showing its origin, and not a hint of candied fruit or brown sugar (latter two flavors I consider "flaws" in CA Pinot). Despite being burgundian for California Pinot, this would never be confused for Burgundy. Just a lovely drink that I believe will reward cellaring for many more years. 14% vol alc.
