2001 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape (France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

Oh boy (sigh). Not good at all. Opened one bottle that was a leaker (defective cork) and this was the second bottle. Great cork, good condition. Popped and poured and followed over the course of a few hours. This is really nothing special. Somewhat muted nose and searing tannins on the palate. Some fruit, but the fruit is already losing out to the structure of the wine and the finish is drying in a bad way. Based on my experience, the fruit will recede further and leave a tannic, acidic skeleton behind. I would drink as soon as possible and I'll make a point of staying away from this producer in the future (there are reports of other good vintages having similar deficiencies).
