2005 Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape (France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape)

For the life of me, I cannot understand how all the major critics rated this above 90 pts. It's a decent wine, that I would categorize as a good CdR or a mediocre CdP. No obvious flaws or heat damage, just awfully average. It's tannic, but beyond that, all I get is licorice, and some fairly non-descript and thin fruit, along with heavy earth and tree bark. No amazing finish to speak of and no layers of fruit or flavors. Maybe I just don't like this producer's style, but I'd like to think I know the difference between excellent and average no matter the style of a CdP...

Update: 3 days later, this has opened up quite a bit. I think those who said that this was shut down hard were right on the money. I still don't think this is life altering stuff, but it's definitely deserving of being called very good with CdP typicity.
